There is a choice of three workshops from the following list:

Children's Publishing - Kate Harris

Publishing for children is a very popular career path. Kate Harris, Managing Director of the Education and Children's Division at Oxford University Press, will talk about why this area is so appealing, what makes a great children's book and, she will provide advice, based on her extensive experience about the best route into this sector.

 

Journals - Christine Appel

Journals publishing is an often under-rated area of the industry but there are many opportunities in this field to develop an exciting and varied career. In this workshop Christine Appel, Publisher for Arts & Humanities Journals at Routledge will talk about her own experiences in the industry, as well as providing a general overview of journals, explaining why it is one of the best kept secrets for a publishing career path.

 

Literary Agents - Pat White

In this workshop Pat White will reveal all about the varied and fascinating daily working life of a Literary Agent. Pat began her publishing career at the end of the '50s as a secretary at Simon and Schuster in New York and she has worked her way up the ladder to become a current Director of Rogers, Coleridge & White Ltd. and, the Agent responsible for their children's and illustrated list.

 

Magazine Publishing - Leander Reeves

Leander Reeves will present a workshop on the ins and outs of the vast magazine publishing world, covering how to get into it, how it differs from book publishing and what career paths are available. Leander has many years experience in magazine publishin and currently teaches the magazine publishing module for Oxford Brookes University's MA in Publishing.

 

Marketing - Alison Baverstock

How do you market a product successfully in the competitive world of publishing? What are the key skills for working in this field? What is the role of the author in marketing? Learn about marketing from both the publisher's and the author's point of view with Alison Baverstock, Author and Marketing Consultant. Alison began her career in publishing and went on to set up a marketing consultancy. She has published widely, including 12 books. Her first book, How to Market Books, is often referred to as the 'bible of marketing'.

 

Publishing Career Success: 'Choice or Chance?' - Giles Clark & Nicholas Jones

How do you get started in publishing? And how do you develop a long and successful career? You could not ask for two better qualified people to answer these questions than Giles Clark and Nicholas Jones, who will jointly host this workshop. They will speak about how to get ahead in a thriving and competitive industry and how to keep momentum in your career, whichever sector you work in.
