The opening debate will look at how independent publishers and large conglomerate publishers operate within and affect our society.

This discussion will focus on how both publishing models are engaging, influencing and shaping global and local communities, particularly in terms of their economic and cultural impact. We will also be looking at how each model is adapting to the digital age and taking advantage of new digital advancements, and asking whether or not this is in the publishers’, and society’s, favour.

Some questions up for discussion:

  1. What are the different impacts of independent and conglomerate publishers? Where are they similar?

  2. How do these two models contribute to society?

  3. Quality of publishing vs. quantity of publishing – can we combine the two for publishing success?

  4. What current economic, environmental, social challenges exist for these two publishing models?

  5. How will digitisation change the structure of the industry itself? Will it affect how the two models are run?

  6. How will digital publishing impact on global society over the coming decades, and how will the two different publishing models act or react?
