Welcome to the SYP Conference 2009 Website!
We’re very excited about this year’s conference. It’s taking place at Oxford Brookes University on Saturday 14th November 2009. The conference itself has been an annual SYP tradition since the mid-1960s, and is the highlight event in the SYP calendar.
If you’re a graduate hoping to break into publishing, or a young professional already working hard in the industry, this conference will provide a fantastic opportunity for you to hear from some of the top names in publishing, and mingle with like-minded individuals. We’ve got some superb events on throughout the conference which will inform, provoke and entertain. Whether you’re serious or just curious about publishing, this day is not to be missed! Register now!
The theme of this year’s conference is The Impact of Publishing upon Society, focusing on the ways in which the publishing industry engages with, influences and shapes both local and global society.
From one perspective, publishers are in a unique position of being purveyors of knowledge and ideas, who hold the key to making learning and education accessible to all. But this must, most often, be accomplished in a highly competitive, global commercial environment. Up front, this can look like a clash of ideals with reality. However, does a tension need to exist? Is it possible to achieve commercial success whilst maintaining integrity in relation to content and responsibility towards consumers? Can society be viewed comfortably from a publisher’s perspective as both a market and as a community to be served?
These are just some of the questions we hope to see addressed at this year’s conference. Just click here to find out more about the theme, as well as who’ll be coming along to speak, and for more details on where it is, how to get there, and how to register.
